What is Books4Brains?
Books4Brains is a grassroots literacy initiative started by Melissa Agnew in partnership with School District 71. The goal is simple but powerful: ensure that every kindergarten and Grade 1 student in the Comox Valley has access to books they can choose, take home, and keep.
Melissa, who grew up without books of her own, wanted to give today’s children the gift she missed—stories they can call their own. To make this vision real, she partnered with teacher-librarians across the district, and every single school signed on. Students are invited to select three books they’re excited about, which are delivered in tote bags filled with extras like stickers and bookmarks—thanks to generous donations and deals from publishers.
This initiative helps ensure no child is singled out. Every student in the class participates, removing stigma and building a love of reading that extends into their homes. The joyful response from kids—and their heartfelt thank-you notes—speaks volumes about the program’s impact.
What Our Club Does to Support It
Comox Rotary is proud to be a long-time supporter of Books4Brains. Alongside Courtenay Rotary Club, we have donated $500 annually for the past 3–4 years, and in 2025, we’re increasing our donation to $1,000 to help the program grow.
These funds help cover the cost of books and materials, allowing every K–1 student in our community to start building their own personal library—three books at a time. By the time a student finishes Grade 1, they could own six books thanks to this program.
Supporting early literacy aligns perfectly with Rotary’s core values, and we’re proud to stand behind such a meaningful and community-rooted initiative.
